About This Blog and Me

Hello and welcome to my blog! I’m RIMG_20150228_221949hea, and this is the blog I’ve created for my Freshman Seminar- Noodle Narratives on the Silk Road. I’m a freshman at Emory University and I’m from Bangalore, India. Although I’m officially undeclared, I’m hoping to explore my interests in Business, Psychology and Theatre during my time here at Emory.   Food has always been an (if not the most) important part of my life, and I’m excited to try out what this course has to offer! About Me

Hi everyone!

My name is Lucy Hansen, and I am currently a freshman at Emory University. Thanks to Emory College, Dr. Ristaino, and Dr. Li, I have the unique opportunity to take a seminar on noodles this semester, and this is the corresponding blog.

I am originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, where I lived with my parents, sister, four cats, and a dog. I was thrilled to be able to attend Emory, and I love being in the amazing city of Atlanta. On campus, I am involved with the Homeless Outreach and Awareness Project and student theater. I also work at Doc Chey’s Dragon Bowl, where I eat my fill of noodles. Enjoy!

About me

Hi, my name is Koby Junyoung Han. I was born and raised in Busan, Korea. I moved to Singapore in grade 5 and finished my high school there in local school. Fun fact about me is that I was initially admitted to Emory as class of 2017. However, I deferred my admission in order to complete 2 years of mandatory military service in Korea. I worked as English-Korean interpreter soldier in Korea-US combined forces command in Seoul. After getting discharged, I went to Belgium to work as an intern before finally coming to Emory. That being said, I am probably the only 21-year-old freshman in Emory. It is indeed great to be a legal freshman. I enjoy playing sports, especially basketball and tennis. Also classical music is an essential part of me. At first glance, I may appear pretty reserved, cold and quiet but everyone will eventually figure out the real ‘me’ hidden under such facade. I do enjoy meeting new people and making friends. Coming from British culture and education system in Singapore, my English may sound awkward at times but I am trying hard to pick up American English as soon as possible. I am truly looking forward to the seminar, making new friends and learning about Chinese/Italian noodles.

About Me

Hi! My name is Ameya, and I’m a first-year at Emory. I’m from Plano, Texas, and attended the Texas Academy of Math and Science for the past two years. In terms of subjects I love to learn, neuroscience and chemistry are really exciting to me. I’ve also done scientific research in bioinformatics and biochemistry in the last few years. Some of my hobbies include playing saxophone, singing, playing basketball, and sleeping whenever I get the chance. I currently sing for Dooley Noted, so come out and take a listen whenever you get a chance.

Something relevant to this course is certainly my favorite noodles, which would have to be pad thai. I also love sushi or chocolate chip cookies. Within the past couple years, I’ve also been learning how to cook–an activity that has injured me but also led to some serendipitous creations. For this class, I can’t wait to see how food goes beyond my current perception, which is basically just as a way to keep my alive.

Thanks for reading, and be sure to let me know if you would like to grab a bite to eat (preferably pad thai, sushi, or chocolate chip cookies)!

About me

Hello.  My name is Jimin Kim.  I was born in Korea and was mainly raised in Korea except for three years of my life when I went to New Zealand to study English.  My experience in New Zealand exposed myself to various cultures. Since then I started to gain interest in learning different cultures. I later attended foreign language high school in Korea. I majored in Chinese along with English. Then I decided to go abroad to study.  This decision made me attend university in the US, here in Emory.  With the precious opportunity of the freshmen seminar, I chose to extend my interests in various cultures and found this combination of Chinese and Italian classes perfect for me.

To briefly talk about who I am other than my academic interests and experiences, I am an outgoing person who likes to be involved in social events. I tend to socialize with others in both informally and formally. Especially I love to be in situation where you can communicate with others in natural environment like dancing with others. Although being in a new cultural atmosphere is making me be myself a bit difficult, I hope to get along with other students taking this course too.

Hello, my name is Sukyung Kim, though I prefer to use Su Kim in class, and I am thinking of studying Computer Science as major, along Economics as minor. I am originally from Seoul, Korea, but I have lived almost 7 years in States. So far, I have lived in four different states, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, and now Georgia. Out of those states I have lived in, I stayed in Virginia the most, graduating high school there. Although I left Korea a while ago, I have been going back home every break, so I do not really feel apart from my family and friends back at home. I chose to take this class because I have a deep interest in both Chinese language and its culture. I took 3 years of Chinese while I was in high school and am currently taking Chinese 202 course at Emory. I really enjoy learning Chinese and plan to stay in China some time in future. I got such interest since my father had started working in China. Since then, I have gone to China every summer, and my friend and I are planning to visit Hong Kong this summer. I hope to learn more about Chinese culture and hope to find same interest in Italian culture as well!

Hi! I’m Cecillia and I’m a freshman at Emory. I was born in Seoul, South Korea, but never lived there; I’ve lived abroad my entire life in Bangkok, Thailand and Jakarta, Indonesia. My entire life revolved around swimming and playing the cello, both of which I started in second grade. While I now play field hockey instead of swimming, I still play the cello in Emory’s orchestra, and dedicate a large part of my life to it. I’m not sure what I want to major in yet, but am considering either double majoring in international studies and creative writing to work in the journalism industry, or double majoring in music and psychology to explore music therapy.

About Me

I am currently a freshman at Emory University in Atlanta, but I am originally from Washington, D.C. I went to an international primary, middle and high school. Before primary school, I lived in Belgium for four years and learned to speak french fluently. My favorite academic subjects are probably film, political science and history (I am a double major in film studies and political science). I love learning about the past and how it has affected the present and will affect the future.

I have two sisters, one twin and one two years older than me. I am not sure why this is relevant, but I feel that they have shaped some of my life and decisions I have made over time. I really enjoy cooking and I have worked as a sous-chef at several ambassador’s residences in D.C, and this past summer I worked at a catering company.

I plan to go into screenwriting and television production as a career, but that could always change and I am always up for new opportunities.

Hello, my name is Seungheon Phee and my English name is Andrew. I emigrated from Seoul, South Korea to the US when I was 15 years old, which is about four years ago. I live in New Jersey with my family. I am currently a freshman in Emory College. I am trying to major in computer science or business. I want to study these subjects in future and become a respected professional in one of the fields. During my free-time I like to play soccer or just lie down on my bed and watch all different kinds of shows.

I am a very hard-working and respectful student. I try as hard as I can to reach my goals, and I respect not only the teachers but also other students in the class. I try to listen to others and get to know more about them. Not as a student but as a person I am sociable. I love communicating with my friends and care for them when they need help. One thing about me that is important to know is that at first I might be a shy individualistic guy but once I get close and comfortable to that person, I am more like myself and become more friendly.
